This is a sumptuously appointed six-CD collection of the iconic country artist Merle Haggard's later Capitol Records years. A follow-up to the German reissue label Bear Family's 1995 UNTAMED HAWK set, it compiles most of the recordings Haggard made throughout the end of the 1960s and the first half of the '70s, during one of the most divisive periods in 20th-century American history. Though the singer's appeal during this polarized time was superficially conservative, as evidenced by songs such as "Okie From Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side of Me," he was actually a rugged individualist in the true country tradition, whose sentimental streak, displayed here on such classics as "Silver Wings" and "I Forget You Every Day," was a mile wide.
