Originally released in 1982 and reissued in 2007 as a double CD, Sounds of Yesteryear's It's Magic is a collection of vintage live broadcast performances by Bing Crosby with accompaniments by John Scott Trotter's sweet band, often gilded with sugary strings and candied choruses. Pianist Oscar Levant shows up to poke fun at Al Jolson on the last track of disc two ("Medley: Blame It on My Youth/Lady Play Your Violin"), and Peggy Lee lends her charm here and there, but much of this collection finds Bing nestled into the syrup like a maraschino cherry among cling peaches. The most exciting moments occur during "Down Yonder" and the rowdy Dixieland standard "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave to Me." ~ arwulf arwulf
