After checking several others from the library, this was the only guide book that I bought, and took with me, for a first trip to Japan. In my own experience, descriptions were accurate and "must-sees" pretty much on target. As we were travelling with a JR Rail Pass it was particularly helpful for finding about smaller places along the way.

If you are travelling around Japan (not just Tokyo and Kyoto) you don't need any other guide. It includes itineraries, where to stay, where to eat and things to see including quirky little local details and facts other guides don't mention. I thought I could just take notes from it but I'll have to take the whole book, though it is heavy!
