Like his better known novel "The Jungle", Upton Sinclair's "King Coal" provides an excellent description of the poor working conditions in the coal mining industry during the 1910's. Through his focus upon principal characters, Sinclair highlights ways that the industry exploited workers and urges socialism as a way to rectify the conditions that lead to near universal exploitation of the working class. The novel is well written, compelling and not merely a "muckraking" tract.
