Wonderfully written, great story, a book worth a reread. I cannot stress enough how much I loved the start of this trilogy. Her characters are so well developed they become a part of you, the tale so magical, you almost wish it were your own. Jacqueline Carey was a stranger to me. A friend pointed me in the direction of these books almost timidly. I am no great fan of fantasy fiction, but these books, especially this one, won me over. Phedre will always be a part of me.
I loved the book, it's suspension level is great with enough political twists and turns in a fantastic world that leave you breathless and wanting more. It's about a courtesan raised with a "Kushiel's Dart" in her left eye that allows her to feel extreme pleasure whenever she physically feels pain. There is nothing to dislike about it, however with all of the intrigue and political manuevering, some people might find it a little dull, whereas I found it to be perfect.
I just have to say, when you read this series you have to start here or you will be a bit lost. I fell so in love with all the people of this series that I truly mourned when it was over. I cried, laughed, felt the pain, became aroused and fell in love. Then mourned. This series left me yerning for more. And Carey has delivered.
This book is deemed as an erotic fantasy novel. Indeed, it can be a bit raunchy at times, but there is so much more. Jacqueline Carey describes such so that you will see through Phedre's eyes and feel every emotion, love, hate, and pain, that she experiences. There is war and intrique, traitors and mysteries. The book will not slow down until the last word on the last page. I highly recommend this book for any adult.
One of my very favorite books! The whole trilogy is amazing! This author has an amazing way of painting very vivid pictures. She invents a whole world that comes to life.
