This is a deceptively underated lens that has recieved mixed reviews, but in the context of cost, it is a brilliant travel lens that delivers virtually the same results as its bigger brothers, if used wisely. But there's a caveat; I am reviewing it on the basis of a DX frame (Nikon D7000)only. To look at its performance on a chart, you might give it a wide birth, but in the real world, I am consistently getting stunning pictures from this little gem. It is particularly impressive at its wide end, even at full aperture the results are acceptable in good light. It is supposed to have some distortion issues, but given that I do not use it for accurate architectural work, I just don't have the problem. It's not the best feeling lens mechanically, but it has been reliable for me, and if used carefully will deliver excellent results. It's a shaft drive auto focus, but quick enough for me and certainly consistently accurate. Which is good, because I don't find it to be the easiest lens to manually focus. In summary, I think this is an excellent example of where technical lens tests and reviews can get in the way of just getting on with taking good pictures!Read full review
