I was skeptical because I've been shooting 15 years with consumer gear and actually prefer to shoot between f/8 and f/11. I got the lens used in great condition at a good price so thought I'd treat it as a rental to see if I'll use it or stick with the 70-300VR. Though the 70-300VR is great this is definitely a step up and I'm surprised at how much I like shooting at f/2.8. The only thing is don't put it on a cheap body - at least get something you can AF-fine tune because you will need to tune your body if you care about sharpness. On 3 bodies I tuned to -3, -4 and -8. This lens is heavy and it can cause you back or hands to ache. Sharpness is very good even wide open. (I'm told the VRII is even sharper but with a focus breathing trade off). AF is fast. Ergonomics aren't bad given the weight. Overall very pleased and unless I find I'm not using it due to weight I will be keeping it. For me this is about as much as I'd pay for a lens - I wouldn't pay 2-3x as much to buy the VRII brand new. I'm pleased with my purchase and look forward to putting it to good use.Read full review

This have nearly no performance difference with current 70-200mm F2.8 II, and better close focus. also VR is 2nd generation. I love this lends.
Great lens if you are price limited otherwise you should probably go for the VRII but it's a nice lens all the same.
This Nikkor lens was the first to use the VR and going from 70- to 200mm F2.8 G AF-S that replace the old 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S ED lens. The lens is lighter to hold on your hand and can remove tripod collar which is a choice you can do. I bought the lens secondhand and it has been good to use with my Nikon D300 with MB D10 batterygrip. The 70-200mm f2.8 VR can be use for anything you can do with FX or DX cameras D3 series, D300 series and D700 or D7000 cameras as well as F5, F6, F100 35 mm cameras. Indoor shoot like low light and can use the VR or outdoor shoots like sports. Focus is good when you focus on a subject or person. You can buy third party lenshood on Ebay (HB 29) for about $14. The lens is well built and can take a few a scratches. I am very happy with this lens and have good experience in shooting with it.Read full review
