Owned a simple; film only, DVD copy. Saw this; and being ‘cheap’, decided to use this to ‘upgrade’ my copy. Commentary is provided by 2 Australian film critics/historians. This makes it highly amusing; informative; idiosyncratic and worth owning. Along with tales about trademark battles with Stoker’s widow &the production company (only formed to do this film); there’s a historical situating in the post-WW1 Germany. For example; movie importing was impossible so there was suddenly a plethora of companies making domestic films. This was one of the first ‘Expressionist’ movies; and such has minimal ‘traditional signifiers’ other than an abstracting of the visuals whenever Nosferatu appears. It is explained the ways this tale differs from the original; FUN FACT : this is THE FILM that ‘established’ the ‘sunlight kills’ canon. In Stokers book; as shown by Coppola, Dracula can move easily about in daylight. The other REASON to purchase this is the extra : DANTES INFERNO (1911) in complete form. Plus there is a number of shorts from a variety of 1920’s-30’s horror films. Overall; if you ever see in a 2nd-hand store cheap - GET IT!! Otherwise; purchasing ‘new&sealed’ is not a great outlay. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽+half (only because I was hoping for more ‘Expressionist’ elements). Read full review
