PARER'S WAR tells the story of a character who is large in World War II Australian history. Including actual footage from the front line in New Guinea, a heart rending record of jungle warfare. And yet his private life was complex and sweet. The back ground to the making of the film allows us to further understand the torn situation of this young man who did not return from the battles in New Guinea. His newsreels won the first Academy Award to an Australian film. The writer tells of discussions with Parer's widow who described the first night of marriage in details exactly replicated in the film. In an understated way the film reveals anxiety, exhilaration, love and joy. This is a must see account of part of Australia's history.

Found this movie to be a real eye opener about Newsreel cameraman Damien Parer. He was there with the diggers and commandos in the jungles of New Guinea capturing what today can only be described as pure gold in terms of movie footage of the war on Australia's front doorstep.
