This instructional book has been refered to as the Bible of pedal steel guitar teaching guides and I can understand why. When I was beginning to learn the instrument I became increasingly frustrated with it, trying to play what I was hearing on records and the radio. I taught myself the six string and bass guitar this way, but I soon came to see that the steel was going to be a whole new animal. I found this book at a small music store in Florida in 1982. I took it home, put the pull-out record on the turntable and started reading the tablature and playing along with it. Well, there it was, the sound of the pedal steel guitar, right there on the pages, coming from the record player, and eventually, with steady practice, from my hands, feet and instrument. This is a wonderful book, it is full of information beneficial in every way to steel guitarists of all experience levels. Winnie also compiled and edited another terrific book "Pedal Steel Guitar- A Manual Of Style" which saw four of the instrument's most unique players: Terry Bethel; Jimmie Crawford; John Hughey; and Weldon Myrick come together for a powerhouse teaching vehicle. Thanks for letting me review this favorite music book. It brings back fond memories. Charlie RayRead full review
This is book is a great value, a complete treatise of the history and theory behind this totally US American instrument. It deals with the developers, the musical theory as well as the mechanics of the device. It is WELL worth the cost for the new player or any wishing to study the history and evolution of the instrument.

I will keep it in my music library. It is an oldie but really teaches the basics...at the beginning to learn what can be done and why!

This was known as "The Book" back in its day. Lots of pros got started with this book. I had one back in the 70's when I dabbled in pedal steel. Took up the instrument again and just had to have this again. It now comes with a CD intead of the flimsy vinyl record it used to have that was always warped and almost impossible to play.Really glad to have this again. It will be indespensable I am sure.
Great book for beginners. There are only 3 'effective' methods for beginning steel and this is one of them. DeWitt 'Scotty' Scott and Winnie Winston, creators of THE 3. If you're looking for the 'keys to the city,' check out everything by these two cats... The jury's still out on all others. Respectfully Submitted, Regi Oliver, 'Just a servant of the cause.
