I currently am lucky enough to own the BluRay of "The House on Haunted Hill" (1999) that got released in the UK back in 2015 and I watch it constantly as it is hands down one of the greatest horror remakes of all time. Unfortunately I'm not here to review that film but rather the somewhat disappointing and pretty meaningless sequel, "Return to House on Haunted Hill" which ultimately was just made because as horror rules go, there must be a sequel. This wasn't a horrible film but much rather an entertaining and unnecessary sequel. The plot is, the sister of the survivor from the first film is forced to go to the house on haunted hill with her sisters diary to help find a historic artefact hidden in the house. This film is a lot bloodier than the previous film which was more creepy than bloody but it seems to have switched. The film has pretty good acting for a straight-to-DVD horror movie sequel and Jeffery Combs is a standout in the movie as the ghost of the doctor gone mad, Dr Richard Benjamin Vannacutt. Dr Richard Benjamin Vannacutt wasn't in the first film too much which is what him creepy so when I heard he shows up in this film a lot I was concerned that he would no longer be creepy but Jeffery Combs pulls it off and still manages to be creepy. This film only lets you know the key characters instead of all of them so when some die you don't really care and just shrug it off like a bump in the road to the conclusion of the film. The characters are sort-of likeable even if a bit cliché. All up the movie was fine but nothing great and despite the fact it's a straight-to-DVD horror film it feels bigger budget than it should which both adds and detracts from the atmosphere. The film is quite stylistically different form the first film and is constantly the ghosts different stories. There was a scene containing three women kissing each other quite sexually but it became unsexy as fast as it became sexy. In regards to the BluRay quality, the video is 1080p and is for the most part sharp. It's clear most of the time but is hard to tell during dark scenes but the colours were perfect. The blacks were perfect and deep throughout and there was never a scene too dark. The sound is a unfortunately a not a DTS-HD audiotrack but rather a 5.1 Dolby Digital track. Even though it's only a Dolby digital audiotrack it sounds fantastic, with gunshots sounding appropriately louder than voices, dialogue being crystal clear, screams sound unbelievable real, the gory sound effects are well mixed among the other audio and the incredible theme music just blasts away adding even the slightest touch of atmosphere. The BluRay's special features aren't anything special but contain a music video, additional scenes and a video gallery but the highlight of the show is the Your Cut which utilises the revolutionary navigational cinema technology which basically turns the film into a choose your own adventure book. It works but it doesn't as it is just a prolonging the inevitable tool for characters deaths. All up this is an enjoyable BluRay release of an okay straight-to-DVD horror movie. I suggest fans of the previous film released in 1999 and fans of horror films in general should check this out. It's an entertaining nonsensical horror film and I'd give it a 5.9/10.Read full review
