This is a moving and beautifully written account , by Raimond Gaita, of the life of his father, Romulus, the hardships of his early life in Europe and the difficulties he faced after migrating to Australia. The unusual family relationships, poverty and sometimes fraught connection of father and son are compellingly portrayed. The family's struggle to survive on a small farm in central Victoria and Romulus' descent into mental illness and partial recovery are part of an extremely difficult life met with amazing resilience and unrelenting effort. I strongly recommend Romulus, My Father, as a book that we all should read.
