Patrick Barclay knows his subject, as the biography he has written of Sir Matt Busby, is detailed in many respects. The book starts with Matt's early life, which helps explain his outlook to management when he arrives at Manchester United. It also details his playing days with Liverpool and Man City, much of which I didn't know. As would be expected, the management side of Matt is broken into 2 parts, pre and post Munich. However, it does explain and detail the team Matt was building prior to the fateful plane accident in 1958 that wiped them out, in such a way that I gleaned a lot of information I didn't know. The period after the crash up to the 1968 European Cup win is well written, and builds the reader up to the triumph Matt engineered. Like many of these biographies, the period after a persons major role is where this book probably dips a bit. I got the feeling the author was padding it out towards the end, as there really wasn't much to write about in Matt's latter years. However, overall this is a good book, well written and would be an enjoyable read for any sports keen person, irrespective of whether they like English Football and/or Manchester United.Read full review
