The book spans the time period between 1780s to the end of the War of 1812. The new nation, initially reluctant to get entangled in Old World conflicts, depended too heavily on trade with those nations not to be affected by the belligerents. The first six ships that were authorized by the then new constitutional republic are the common theme of this book. On these, their origin, and their employment are affixed the surrounding politics, conflicts, and diplomacy, both intra- and international. If looking for an exposition of naval architecture, read elsewhere. It is assumed the reader understands 18th century naval vernacular. Battles at sea are described to various degrees of detail; those that are well described dispel any notion of swashbuckling glamour. Other books may describe far more completely the individual actors, but this book puts the origins of US naval war fighting capability in excellent context.Read full review
