I have been a longtime user of Sony Xperia Z, 5 years exactly while the phone did the job it was never the ideal device it had faults and design flaws but the thing is, the phone worked very nicely for its time. Upgrading to Samsung never felt right, software is still sluggish compare to pure Android experience, a lot of apps I never use included and while OLED displays are nice the design of the phone is not so nice with all the curves makes it very slippery and unoriginal look. Sony Xperia XZ1 however is a device in its own category, it has a Sony IPS display but the battery life of an AMOLED phone while having a tiny battery to boast as well, how Sony managed to do this magic is beyond me but there are clever battery saving features built into the software by Sony. Android is largely untouched and maintains very pure without heavy interface customisation ontop of it which means the phone is very snappy and quick. In heavy performance demanding tasks the phone features Snapdragon 835 which is up to the task, it neither gets too hot unlike its predecessors while maintaining good clock speeds, this phone can run PPSSPP emulator at full speed at 2 times resolution with rarely any frame drops using Vulkan. The fingerprint reader is excellent with unlocking speeds up there with the best, any faster and I worry its not working properly but Sony has just the right speed. The phone also features notification LED in RGB colours, a lot of phones these days with notification LED is usually an Asian feature, to see Sony include this on the global version of their phone is a nice touch. The phones camera is also excellent but could have been better, while boasting manual control which I always appreciate the phone's camera app lacks RAW .DNG support and does not have manual control for aperture. Despite this the phone will get the job done and is a good performer for most of your needs while it wont beat the S8 or iPhone X it certainly is not far behind. RAW .DNG support would put it above all competitors though and full manual control ability. The slow motion features is more of a gimmick however I rarely find any use for these, its something you can have fun with more than being useful for anything scientific or experimental. Lastly the phones build quality is top notch while its not Nokia sturdiness its certainly a huge improvement over the previous Sony designs that used glass bodies and aluminium frame, now Sony is using a unibody aluminium chassis which feels very sturdy with very minimal bends. The metal texture is also very good while not being too smooth nor too rough, the phone is just the correct height and size for being able to be used one handed and I do have quite average hand size for an European. The phone is also very lightweight despite its looks, its lighter than a 5.5 inch phone and even lighter than the Galaxy S7. Firmware is easy to reflash for your location as well, remember to use XperiFirm to download the legit Sony firmware of their servers and Newsflasher to flash the firmware on any 2017+ Sony phone.Read full review
