No two ways about it: Soul Eater is a blast. Its chaotic and often a little absurd, but it's original, wonderfully animated, and never less than a good time. Visually, studio Bones delivers one of their most striking series ever, with a vibrant art style that's not like much else out there. Likewise, the animation is consistently fantastic throughout, and the action sequences the series centres around are almost always amazing. The main cast of characters is great, and the show works best when their different personalities are allowed to play off one another. The series' central "gimmick" of people who can literally transform into weapons is brilliant and original. The plot however is slow to get going and suffers in periods where the supporting cast gets screen-time or where heaps of expostion gets laid out. By the time this first half of the series is complete though, the plot starts to gain momentum and the mythology of the world that the series spends so long setting up earlier begins paying off. All things considered, Soul Eater more than earns its place in the pantheon of great modern anime. Its by no means perfect, but what it lacks in narrative depth, it makes up creativity and irrepressible energy. If youre looking for a fun, original series that doesn't take itself too seriously, Soul Eater is well worth a look.Read full review
