The loss of Australia's newest warship 'HMAS Sydney' in a battle with the German raider 'Kormoran' off the coast of Western Australia in November 1941, although investigated by the Australian Navy soon after, largely remained a mystery amid much conjecture for many years. The finding of the wrecks of the two ships in 2008 helped solve some of the mystery. This book is an excellent and well written account of the actual events that unfolded that fateful afternoon. The author has spent considerable time in deciphering various documents including a code book of a battle report prepared by Captain Detmers of the 'Kormoran', previously overlooked by naval investigators. Other books about the loss of the Sydney have contained conjecture and half facts. This book contains only the truth of what happened and doesn't gloss over why the captain of the Sydney took his ship into point blank range of all guns on the disguised raider. The author also documents the discovery of the two ships, and includes photographs of the damage sustained by 'HMAS Sydney'. To any reader interested in the truth about the Sydney, this is the book to buy.Read full review
