Unfamiliar with the work of Anne Sebba, I saw a documentary of the late Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson and observed a reference to the author. This, as usual with me, caused an instant search for more information. Finding the new book on EBay, I purchased it quickly. I have not been disappointed for a single moment; indeed I have been utterly fascinated. Mrs Simpson, the Queen-that-wasn't, was a complex, pitiful figure with little recourse in her early life. Sadly, she ended her life as she started it - alone, outcast, with few friends and scant regard for the truth. With considerable and documented research, Sebba manages to get to the real essence of 'that woman' and does so with no real bias or judgement. Interestingly, it is Sebba's incidental analysis of the Royal Prince's character that shows his younger brother was clearly the better choice as King. If you have an interest in history, women in the early C20th or scandalous royalty, I would recommend this book with no hesitations. In fact, I have now started to look for other works by Anne Sebba.Read full review
