The first DVD "The BACK of BEYOND" is a re-enactment of the fortnightly journey of mailman Tom Kruse and his offsider through the dusty outback from Maree in South Australia to Birdsville in Queensland, showing the trials and tribulations that were a part of the journey in those early days. There is a tale of the two lost children that leaves one wondering if it was actually true, but overall the tale is well made and highly entertaining in a realistic and down to earth manner. The second DVD is more about the film maker and his films, with an inclusion of a final trip by Tom Kruse along the Birdsville track in his Toyota Landcruiser, visiting his old stops, some now in ruins. Again, a very entertaining and informative film. This second DVD as received has some picture quality issues in the first one third as the picture would drop out at times, although the sound track was always present. Overall a good product.Read full review

Great old film footage of Men who knew how to drive and survive out in the bush. Now a days with all the sophisticated mod cons we have lost the ability to travel our country. The old guy's knew their equipment and trucks and could repair them rather and keep going when they had issues. Great movie and should be viewing to all the 4X4 Drivers, that if you are going bush, you need to know how to fix the vehicle, carry provisions for several days and have common sense. Enjoyed the part where he had to drive his Mail Delivery Truck around the Clay Pan several times to build up speed so he could get up and over a sand dune. Know I wouldn't have survived in those conditions and in those days.

The Back of Beyond is a black and white Masterpiece depicting Outback Australia before roads. It shows a tough life and the real problem solving skills of the Austraian Outback pioneers, giving you a glimpse of real life on Cattle Stations along the Birdsville Track from the 19030's to the 1950's The movie took 6 months to film. Just filming this movie was unimaginably tough. The crew camped in the most remote deserts in Australia for 6 months. The heat was so intense that a lot of the recordings simply melted, and had to be re-shot. Then there were the floods....
