This is a beautiful drawn and written story of the adventures of Tin Tin. Written over 80 years ago, back in the 1930s, the writer exhibits a remarkably modern view of multiracial friendships. Tin Tin's friend is drawn in the most sympathetic manner and a stab is taken at racist depictions of Chinese people. Sorry, but the Japanese in this story are the bad guys - hey they started their genocidal war in China and deserve every bit of lampooning. The European powers closeted in Shanghai - thanks to the Opium Wars - are also given a fair and rough treatment, depicted as bigots and bullies. I am still amazed that this was written so long ago at a time when racist attitudes towards orientals was considered the norm. It was only as far back as 1973, that countries like Australia maintained a Whites Only policy and actively discriminated against Asians.Read full review
