Not bad for an amateur.
As a previous editor of Psychology Today, Annie Murphy Paul has some of the worst credentials possble in academic and professional psychology. Nevertheless, she does a competent job of pointing out many of the difficulties associated with assessing personality. The book is well written, and takes a reverential tone when giving the bios of the psychologists whose work she reviews. Unlike the title and cover page suggest, the book does not blow the cover of a scheeming cult, nor does it really roast personality psychology all that much. It does point out many of the problems that the field has worked through and continues to work through, but fails to delve beyond the surface. Paul seems to be an qual oportunity offender, not championing any test or method. I would recommend this book to someone who had recently taken an undergraduate course in testing. A graduate stuent and up would likely find it too elementary, and someone not from the field of psycology wouldn't have the background to put her critiques into perspective.Read full review
