Summary: The Finest Hours - Lifts You Up With Honour KenR. This is somewhat of a modern milestone for a Hollywood-style movie. A gut-wrenching story based on a daring, factually based, historic sea rescue. The screenplay, written by Award nominated Scot Silver along with Eric Johnson & Paul Tamasy proves a strong point...that a powerful story can be told without resorting to the now 'trendy' over-the –top course language - making it an all age spectacular. And, spectacular it is indeed. Based on Michael J.Tougias and co-author Casey Sherman's book of the same name, this exciting story literally dumps the viewer into a tiny Coast Guard rescue boat as its being pounded by the most deadly seas of all. Even though the CGI folk can, and do, tend to overdo things - the angry ocean effects are so convincing they often leave you holding your breath! A strong handpicked stellar cast convince all the way - with Chris Pine and Casey Affleck each putting in hard working performances as the heroic Coast Guard pilot, and the engineer of the stricken cargo giant torn in two by massive winds and seas. Cynical viewers who have been seduced by hard-edged 'modern' scripts - need to be reminded that love in the 1950's moved at a slower, more thoughtful pace than the soulless in-your-face situations we too often see in movies today. Photographically, The Finest Hours features eye-popping visuals by Spanish born D.O.P. Javier Aguirresarobe and the well paced FX are all bound together by some neat direction by Australian Craig Gillespie along with a Carter Burwell score. The atmospheric end title song 'Haul Away Joe' performed by Kodaline sums it up nicely (not to mention all those remarkable 50s cars!). All up it's refreshing, mostly believable, high voltage entertainment, for those who want more than the comic book situations we get thrown at us all too often. The historical news photos of the original crew cap this daring tale off quite superbly. This one deserves more attention and is recommended for a thrilling, fact-based inspirational entertainment, that a wide variety of audiences should enjoy. Read full review

Engaging story, good acting, watching that little coast guard boat in 40 foot seas and going over the bank was amazing and the mind boggling concept of the back half of the tanker still floating after watching Titanic, white Squall and Deadliest catch were amazing.

If you like true-life drama, this movie hits the spot! I had no idea about the events or heroism involved in this actual historic situation until I watched this movie! Much of the action & speech is in the darkness of a massively stormy sea (which broke up 2 tankers!), so the movie doesn't appeal to those of limited eyesight or hearing, but for those with acceptable sight & hearing it's amazing! Watch the credits also, which show photos of the actual heroes. This situation made maritime history and I understand why after watching this movie, but am amazed I'd never heard of the event before this movie. Well worth watching!
