There are lots of lessons to be learned from this book, and kids everywhere love it. It is often used in grade schools, either as a play or as reader's theater. It's about a tree that gives and gives and gives--whether it's fruit, or a place to sit and play, or as a stump to sit on. It's simple enough that little ones enjoy it, but it has more meaning for kids around second or third grade. Also, it makes a great gift book for people of any age.
I loved the book years ago when I first read it to my children. Now I work with Seniors and wanted to share it, and let us reminisce about days gone by. The book is the same, however, the Anniversary CD where Shel reads, does not match up "word for word" with the book. I was disappointed in this as I also want my new grandbaby to learn to read from it. All, in all, Shel Siverstein is a wonderful writer and my oldest daughter, a 4th grade teacher, reades "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to her class! A gift from me several years ago, a well. Thank you!
Very well presented, the illustrations perfectly matching the story and showing the years passing… It’s a story of love and empathy (mostly from the tree). Each child will interpret the story differently of course, but the message is crystal clear for nature lovers My 10 years old grand daughter read it to me as soon as the book arrived. She found the end a little sad, and we got to discuss the whole story’s meaning

I love this book because it tells of the time the father gives to the child and how he uses his talent and strength to bless the child as long as he lives. Great story.
