I saw the movie first many years and that drove me to read the book. Got that from the library and enjoyed it a lot. Watched the movie again recently and decided I should buy a copy of the book so I could enjoy that again as well. I ended up with a copy of 'The Good parts' version, as abridged by William Goldman. Mistake. BIG mistake. The original was a tale told by 'Morgenstern' (through Goldman) and was short, punchy and a lot of fun. Great characters, good story, great plotting, almost believable and as I said, fun. The 'abridged' 'good parts' version is the tale with asides and expansions by Goldman. The gods only know why he did this as it totally spoiled the tale. The short, punchy, superbly presented story gets continually interrupted by Goldman's inserts on his (fictional) life while introducing the story to his (fictional) kid. The flow is broken continuously and pointlessly as he rambles along about his relationship with his (fictional) wife, his (fictional) kid and many other fictional types while he is involved in 'abridging' this story. My thoughts on Goldman as 'abridging author' went from interested to tired to murderous. I literally hated him by the time I finally finished the story. He took a fun story and turned it into something that was not fun, not funny, very dreary and quite hard to read. The book got burnt when I finally managed to finish it so I watched the movie again to wash the taste out of my mouth. I urge you to watch the movie or find the original non-abridged story and not to read this rubbish.Read full review
