I highly recommend you read this book! I bought it after hearing a participant on a recent TV book program say that for him it was a “Life changing experience”. It cost only GBP 6 post free to Oz, and although the illustrations are not very clear everything can be seen well using a computer. Mostly a Marxist rant but although I disagree with just about everything John Berger has to say about Art it has been of great value to me. Through being made to reason out WHY I object to so much of it I have learnt and still am learning, a great deal - reading Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations for example. (For me the most life changing book I ever read was John Ruskin’s Modern Painters - especially Vols. 3 & 4)
A thought provoking analysis of the old masters and their relationship with relatively contemporary 'art'. The viewpoint is relatively left-wing, but that very fact makes this an interesting read from a sociological perspective and it says a lot about about the culture in which painters worked compared to today's cultural world which is awash with digital images.
