a rare insight into a current situation
a film in German (essentially) with subtitles. A sad film. a rare insight into the permanent garrisoning of an Israeli border. Two men in the garrison fall in love. one is killed. In that sense it it another film about the wastefulness of war and the tragedy for individuals caught up in it. the film is well made in an almost 'black and white' format seemingly which gives it an uncanny 'period' feel. It should be seen, if only for the rare glimpse into the reality for recruits there (and by extension everywhere) and the tragedy and pointlessness of it all

Stunningly wonderful
Robert C Review Mahler 8 Simon Bolivar Los Angeles PO April 7 2013
I first heard this - the ultimate choral symphony - in the Albert Hall under Charles Groves - that was a magnificent performance. It must have been in the early 1960's. The opening 'Veni' caused a physical shock wave which I actually felt; I was lucky enough to be in the circular stalls - not the arena - directly central and opposite the conductor.
I have always adored this extraordinary work - a gift to the nation, Mahler called it - I call it a gift to the world. For me, I never fails ...
There is no question but that it needs huge forces.
With the advent internationally of the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and the commitment of these wonderful young people, I fantasized about a performance of the 8th with the huge forces available in Venezuela.
And then this appeared! Well!
The 2 orchestras are fabulous. The soloists are fabulous.
Spiritually and emotionally the playing and the singing is wholly committed to the 'message' of this great work.
Whether you are a 'believer' or not - or whether you believe without actually adhering to any particular sect - this work and this performance raises mankind beyond its all to often self-inflicted chaos and tragedy.
It raises humankind to the aspiration of going beyond itself.
The toweringly great man ‘who was composed’ to give this great gift to us understood this need. It is a miracle.
One either 'gets it' or one does not.
Gustavo Dudamel does.
I cannot possibleyhave anything else useful to add! [Except that we want a compact disc release please - asasp]

I am afraid this is actually bad music -
0 of 3 found this helpful For me it is not a question about the justification or not of the re-working of an old classic - the question is, 'Is this good music?'
It is not - despite being given the 'visual' of the DGG label.
It's just no good and, in places, ugly and, in others, pointless.
