Worth it
“Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive” by Kristen J. Solle is a book that will definitely open your eyes to the reality of being a women not only in America but across the world. This book is a pleasure to read if you have your mind open and if you are not afraid of reading about the taboos of sex and feminism. The purpose of this book is make sure that the readers learn about the impact of feminism in the past and modern world and to teach women and men about herstory and to let the audience know that feminism is not bad as it is often represented in media. Sollee make sure that instead of getting offended by the names people often call to refer to a feminist in a negative connotation, nicknames such as is “witches” or “sluts”, she instead own the names and bounced back stronger than ever making a masterpiece with this book.
The book itself is controversial and talks about very contentious topics such as politics tends to be, for instant in the chapter titled “Hillary Clinton: Wicked Witch of the Left” it is the perfect example of why women can not have power in politics even though they might be the most qualified and prepare contestants and this because just for the simple fact of being a female. Kristen dedicates this entire chapter to the Hillary Clinton a very well prepared women with experience in politics who run for the presidency in 2016 against Donald Trump, during the camping she was often called a “Witch” and often portrayed as incapable of doing the job of president, she lost the elections against a sexual offender who does not have any experience in politics just because he is a man, this give us a glimpse of how the system works.
Another chapter that stood out to me was “Tituba’s legacy”, Solle mentions and dedicates a chapter to Tituba who was a slave that was categorized as a witch, Tituba was more as curandera than a witch which she didn’t mind be label as one (female who uses plants to treat illness), she was very open minded and sex positive as she describes as the most beautiful at in this world. Solle does a great job enlightening us the truth about this herstory figure and who really was and how her legacy still around in today’s modern world.
This book is amazing because it interviews real witches and this happens in the chapter titled “Interview with a Witch” the women whom are interviewed are regular real women with regular lives that are very empowerful, humble and honest in what they do, they are nothing alike in what the typical stereotypes of a witch being green, wears black clothes and is mean, the witches we get to see in this book are feminists that do what they love and are not afraid and careless of what people say about them because they know who they are and love themselves as they are.
In my opinion this is one of the most interesting and informative books that I have ever read, it also talks about many recent events but also it talks about past herstory which is always good to learn from in order to not make the same mistakes as in the past. This book is really worth your time and attention and it will change your perception of many things in life.
