Fine grand tourng car, but not the advertised "ultimate driving machine."
This is a fine grand touring car, particularly for extended road trips. The cabin is quiet, roomy, comfortable and relaxing. Compared to my Jaguars though (1998 XJ8 and 1994 XJ12), this is not a sporty car; despite the "ultimate driving machine" advertising. The BMW 740iL is not nearly as agile and spirited as my Jaguars. The BMW's acceleration is good, but the engine works harder and revs higher to achieve the same result as my Jaguars, especially my XJ12. However, the BMW excels in interior space and overall comfort. Its gas mileage is outstanding for such a large car, and averages around 25 miles per gallon on the highway; almost twice that of my XJ12, yet comparable to my XJ8. The BMW's repair parts are much more readily available than those for my Jaguars, and a lot less expensive. As a DIYer, I find the BMW easy to work on (same as my Jaguars), and technical information more readily available than my Jaguars. Reliability is lower than my Jaguars, so expect a few minor repairs; nothing major, provided the car has been (and continues to be) properly maintained. I was quite surprised to find less expensive technology in the BMW's front suspension (strut type) and old technology in the steering (recirculating ball)for the period the car was manufactured. Many lower cost cars had already converted to full front upper and lower control arm suspensions and rack & pinion steering, by the time. Both technologies provide better ride quality and handling, plus servicing is less expensive and easier. The BMW handles and drives well, none-the-less. Many people would not notice the subtle ride and handling differences, since the car's engineering mostly compensates for the technological short comings. My BMW was a 1 owner vehicle for its entire 15 year, 96,000 mile life, before I bought it. Except for a few cosmetics items, it was generally well cared-for and maintained. Purchased wisely, used luxury cars like this BMW 740iL can be a bargain. From my experience buying high-end, used luxury cars, I advise a prospective buyer to proceed with caution before purchasing any that have had more than one owner. Subsequent owners of these types of vehicles will often times not have the means, or simply not spend the money, for proper upkeep. I have found that, the higher the number of previous owners, the more you should be wary of buying a used luxury car; or any used car, for that matter. I plan to keep this BMW for at least 5 years as a daily driver. So far, I see no reason to doubt that it will serve well in that capacity.

OTC Stinger Bubble ISO Flaring Tool Kit Flare #4504
    04 November 2020
Excellent results on steel tubing, not so much on copper-nickel tubing
Pros: Well designed and manufactured, does an excellent job on steel tubing. Con: Maybe not exactly a "con," but the bubble flare shoulders on copper-nickel tubing are somewhat deformed by this tool. After many trial runs, I found the bubble flares on steel tubing are perfect, so perhaps the deformed shoulders on copper-nickel tubing, are caused by the metal type, rather than the tool. Might a tool re-design fix this problem?
    Radial Arm Saw Techniques

    Much better references are available
The author writes in short, choppy sentences, which makes for difficult reading. The book provides a useful technique or two, but they are not worth trudging through the entire text. Cristoforo's books are far, far better on the subject of radial arm saws.
