Planetary: The holy bible of graphic novels...
Quite possibly the greatest piece of graphic fiction ever created. A series so broad in scope and inticately detailed that it's nothing short of a masterpiece. Planetary is a beautifully woven patchwork tapestry masterfly sewn together from the fabric of monster movies, science fiction, victorian mystery, samurai legend, and pulp hero's. Throughout this fabric is woven intricate references and deconstructions of nearly every era of superhero stories. It is essentially a 27 issue love letter from writer warren ellis to fiction as a medium, and a massive deconstruction and reimagining of the comic book genre. Painted with intricate references that stretch from green lantern and the fantastic 4, to sherlock holmes and H.G. Wells. Ellis has created what is essentially the holy bible of pop fiction. Comic book afficianato's will swoon over the references and reconstrucltions of the legendary icons we all grew up reading. People who have never read comic books are awestruck by the intricacies, magnitude, and overall quality of the story. This is a labor of love, a wonder to behold. It will renew your faith in the power of fiction.
The art, by john cassady, is amongst the best I've ever seen in the medium. Clearly ellis wrote alot of this story for john cassady to stretch his talented artistic wings and soar high into the uncharted. Of cassady's fantastic body of work, Planetary stands as the crown jewel of his near legendary achievements.
The presentation is fantastic. These absolute volumes are the perfect size, not too thick to be unweildly like the absolute sandman volumes. And the artwork and enhanced coloring are a wonder to read in this format. This is one story that definately benefits from the oversize pages, giving you more room to sink into the details of cassady's intricate and layered artwork.
Buy it, read it, love it, live it.

Hellboy: a legendary series about legends themselves
The first solo series hellboy starred in, paving the way for what would later become whats known as the mignolaverse. Mike mignola drew and plotted the now legendary four issue series, while industry legend john byrne helped the then new mignola with scripting. This series includes hellboys origin story, rasbutins first appearance, and a glimpse into a darker, more mystical version of world war two than our history books record. Epic in scope and tied deeply to mythologies from across the world, this series paved the way for hellboys ongoing title, and the spinoff series that developed such as B.P.R.D., abe sapien, lobster johnson, and even baltimore and witchfinder. It marks a milestone in creator owned comics, this set bring particularly valuable because they're some of the very few near mint/mint copies that have been graded and slabbed by the CGC. An amazing series that I would highly reccomend to any fan of comics, fantasy, mythology, or alternate history. No comic book collection can be considered complete without it.
