The Devil in Velvet
I first read this book when I was in college almost forty years ago. I'm not normally a mystery fan, and I know that's what Carr writes. This, however, has a unique quality, with the protagonist travelling back several centuries in order to prevent a crime. It was worth reading again.

Fraser
Over the past thirty years I've read everything written by George McDonald Fraser that I could get my hands on. He is a terrific judge of human nature, and a delightful writer.
I was sad to learn that he passed away in February 2008, so this will be the last of his books I have the opportunity to read. Fortunately this one was up to his usual standards. The only problem I had was with the Cumbrian slang used by his fellow soldiers. This, however, pales in comparison to his incisive thoughts.
