screen crashed soon after purchase, reviews confirm as common problem
so we purchased this used kindle to compare it to our nook. one week later the screen displayed only horizontal lines. what? turns out almost all kindle 2's will experience screen problems. when it came out it was well over $300 and now it is a third of its original price. when we received our used unit it worked fine so we are not blaming the seller. all reports say the kindle2 was working fine and then had screen problems occur. amazon will replace units that are under their one year warranty so if you still want to take a chance, buy a new one directly from them. be aware that many, many kindle2 owners experience screen problems after their warranty has expired. an amazon replacement will then cost roughly the same as purchasing a new one. we have no axe to grind and had done our research, although we did spend about $5 an hour to read a book on the kindle2. no, the unit was not dropped, bent, folded or spindled. when reading what others were experiencing, you think they must have somehow contributed to their units failure. now we believe it is a problem with the kindle 2 and not operator failure. unlike your iphone, there are no owner repairable parts and the only shops that claim an ability to fix (replace) the screen charge more than the price of a new one. go to amazons own site and look at the reviews. wow, lots and lots of one star ratings with screen problems as the issue. we are not endorsing any reader but there are lots of options these days so look around and do your research. we are just glad we did not invest in books for this thing.
