Great starter but a hidden problem
Hi all. Great product and awesome starting power for my 113 CI engine in my 97FLSTC however there is a problem with fitting it up. Had the starter installed in around 4 hours and fired the bike up. Started instantly but the starter pinion would not completely disengage from the clutch gear and it made a hell of a noise. Stripped everything back down and found that the starter pinion wouldn't pull back far enough and clear the gear on the clutch. Hmmmm. I had also replaced the starter Jack shaft and thought that there may have supplied the wrong one but I grabbed my vernier calipers and micrometer and every measurement matched the original. I then bolted up the old starter to check out the clearances and everything was fine. That eliminated the Jack shaft. Refitted the ultima starter and the complete Jack shaft assembly moved about 2 mm closer to the clutch.. Fixed the problem by fabricating a 2mm steel spacer to fit between starter and inner primary cover. Problem solved. It is advertised to fit a range of year models from 89 to 06 and definitely a 97 Flstc so I was a bit pissed when I had to spend an extra 4 or 5 hours diagnosing and fixing the problem when I should have been riding. On the upside it fires the bike up in an instant and apart from the fit up issue I'm pretty happy. Hope this helps someone out. Cheers all
