A few words on the late Cachaito's most prominent album
I'd actually bought this for a friend - hearing that she was fond of the Buena Vista Social Club, I thought it meet to let her have a copy of Cachaito's quite wonderful little record. I'd encountered it myself almost by chance when a friend, who's possessed of a most interesting record collection, let me hear it one evening. In the rather bleak surroundings of Farnborough on a winter's evening, it was definitely a pick-me-up, a small dose of exotic melodies and interesting little improvisations by a man who, being a scion of a family of double-bass players, was quite focused on making his own mark with the instrument. All sorts of fascinating oddments appear on this, including a contribution from the great Hugh Masekela. It was definitely a factor in making Cuba one of the few Caribbean destinations which I am especially keen to visit. There'll be no more from this quarter, I'm afraid, as Lopez succumbed last month to complications arising from prostate surgery. May he rest in peace. This leaves us with just the records, so bend an ear to this one.

    They Still Ain't Dead
I had this for a long time on picture disc, but it fell victim to a foul attack on my record collection a few years ago, and for a number of reasons was among the last to be replaced. But I'm glad I did it. Metallica provided the soundtrack for the early adventures, way back in the days (longer ago than I care to admit) when they still retained a relatively balanced worldview and were not ashamed to consider themselves a metal band. Before the greed and pomp overwhelmed them and condemned them to cultural irrelevancy (amazing how swift that transition was). Although this is hardly an especially ambitious record, either musically or lyrically, it has aged very well. It doesn't take until the end of Hit the Lights to recall why the advent of thrash was necessary, and while endurance was never a selling point, the fresh energy certainly was. They had to move past this album and quickly, but it was a solid start. Jump in the Fire was always a favourite, while Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth), or (Throwing Fools) as is had on the web somewhere is always a refreshing listen. The songwriting is solid and direct, the playing enthusiastic and earthy and even the basic nature of the ideas being put across works as a snub to the vapid pomp into which Metallica decayed.
