I am totally new to anything beyond compact camera shooting, but wanted something with a bit more oomph. I was not intersted in going down the uber compact route ( like the canon s95 for example), so it was down to the micro 4/3 range and the e mount devices to lead me into better photography without the fuss of a full DSLR.
Having had the NEX for a month now i can say that i am satisfied that it fulfills all my camera needs at present and also allows me to get "geeky" with other lenses and deeper into menu settings if i want to later on, setting this to auto intelligent mode, or selecting one of the default pre sets for differnt lighting conditions is a great way to let the camera do all the hard work, while you focus on framing the shot and doing all the creative stuff.
The camera looks amazing so doesnt seem out of place on nights out where a DSLR is a bit of overkill for hanging out with mates at bars. And im not too embarassed to take it out with me for walks where i might chance upon somthing interesting to photograph.
The massive sensor generates photos way beyond what compacts can do, and rivals lower end DSLR's as well. The standard lens is good for me, but i have no basis for comparisson.
