Illusion is EVERYTHING!
I remember as a 10 year boy watching Blonde Venus and seeing this hauntingly beautiful woman strip off a gorilla costume in a musical number named "Hot Voodoo"revealing a smirkingly aware and commanding femme fatale named Dietrich. I was instantly in love and watched any film she had starred in. I even took film courses in my senior college years to understand HOW she kept such a powerful spell over my maturing pysche.
Mrs Riva gave me insight and amusing details on a woman who was in love with herself but always keenly aware that the world had to LOVE & RESPECT her as well. I was amused because while reading the details I was reminded of my own upbringing and sprinkled with the similar bourgeois snootiness my mother and grandmother very often tried to drill unto my brain. I LOVED the details of her war years in Paris and I knew EACH little detail on the conversations Maria remembered of mother's like or disdain of souls long gone during their time.
I was comfortably drawn in and felt the actual pangs and joys She & her mother often experienced with each other.
I'm an only child so I know EXACTLY what Maria was going through dealing with her mother and her judgement of her mama as well. Marlene is still "Miene Mutter" in my head but this bio made me LOVE my mother MORE THAN ever and appreciate the simplicity of the life she had surrounded herself with.
Maria loved her mama but it can be suffocating growing up as a celebrity's offspring.
