Ice Castles (Lynn-Holly Johnson Robby Benson) Region 4 New DVD
22 November 2018
Heartwarming, inspirational and entertaining with an unforgettable theme song.
This is a very heartwarming and inspirational movie set around a very lovely and engaging character of Lexie, a young aspiring ice skater played in an innocent and slightly impish fashion by Lynn-Holly Johnson, herself a champion ice skater of some note. I saw this movie with my two then young children many years ago and have never forgotten the magical skating sequences, and especially the moving and Academy Award winning theme song sung to perfection by Melissa Manchester, then at the peak of her career. Out of all the other characters, the stand out performer is Colleen Dewhurst, a great character actor who also starred in the TV series Anne of Green Gables. Tom Skerritt as Lexie's father gives an excellent performance in a rough and ready type of way, but comes across as a very proud and supportive single parent. A very young Robby Benson plays Lexie's boyfriend who, along with her father, gives Lexie the inspiration, love and support she needs to overcome tragedy. Altogether, a lovely movie for people of all ages and one I would thoroughly recommend. Just as a side comment, Lynn-Holly Johnson went on a few years later to star in a James Bond movie.
Classic Albums 1970's The-5 Album Set - Slim Dusty CD-JEWEL CASE Free Shipping!
30 August 2018
Some of the best songs from the best Australian country balladeer.
These cds feature some of Slim Dusty's earlier recordings, some maybe not as well known as others, but still all show Slim in top form, singing the ballads from the country he loved so well, and featuring some great songwriters such as Joy McKean and Mack Cormack, to name just two. No one else in the history of Australian country music has been able to capture the spirit of this great land in song such as Slim Dusty. With his simple, uncomplicated style of singing, he imbues each song with so much meaning - at times sad and wistful - yet all typically Australian outback and bush characteristics. I can heartily recommend this product to all fans of the master and to any new fans listening to Slim for the first time. You wont be disappointed.
Colm Wilkinson-Some Of My Best Friends Are Songs (US IMPORT) CD NEW
07 March 2019
In a word, stupendous!
This CD may come as a surprise to fans who know of Colm Wilkinson as Valjean in Les Mis and other roles in musicals. However, here he proves himself to be a very good exponent of a genre which could be best classed as a mix of blues/soul, as evidenced by the treatment by him of Funny How Time Slips Away being the best example. This is one of my very favourite songs and Colm's version of it grabs me right from the very first note "Well, hello there, etc." In his raspy, unique and emotion charged voice, he gives the listener a lesson in how to tell a story through a song which he does with flair and finesse in every song. His up tempo version of the old classic Red Sails in the Sunset shows that this fine singer can belt out a tune with the best of them, and the what seems to be deliberate roughness of the tone and melody adds to the appeal. A far cry from Les Mis and the Valjean he has made so famous over the years, this is a CD not only for the dedicated fan of Colm Wilkinson, but for any discerning buyer who is happy to try something a little bit out of the ordinary in delivery of songs, tonal quality and the at times exaggerated diction is always clear and vibrant. Some of my best Friends are Songs would have to rate as one of my very favourite CDs in every way, second only probably to the excellent CD by another musical theatre great, the incomparable Michael Ball's Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and for me that is high praise indeed considering the songs that Michael includes on that CD and the powerful renditions of the same. Ten out of Ten for Colm Wilkinson and I am now looking to add one of his DVDs to my collection.
