The Boys Are Back In Town
1 of 1 found this helpful One of the most powerful heavy rock trios to ever grace the airwaves- Nirvana. And yet even the sudden demise of the lead songwriter and singer of the band, Kurt Cobain, by a self inflicted wound, doesn't blur in anyway the focus of the band. The attemp to bridge the disco/metal/acid rock of the sixties and seventies with the punk rock of the eighties was done with absolute precision.
I guess the real genius behind the band was that they all seemed to understand, on the most potent levels, exactly what Kurt was attempting musically. It's no small task to read the mind of a genius and try to play along. Therefore, it comes as absolutely no surprise that the drummer, Dave Grohl, would go on to become an international star himself as frontman of Foo Fighters. It should also be observed that Foo Fighters is his brain child and that he writes most of the material.
The video is a sort of peak into the world of Nirvana, and that of rock and roll in general. It acts as part documentary, part live video as interviews with the members and performances are captured in a sort of timely sequence. Yet, it doesn't bore us with the same old documentary layout of starting from the beginning of the band to now. It seems to jump right into the deep end, making it almost like a realtime peak into the lives and styles of this amazing trio out of Seattle, WA. I'll let the viewer make up there own mind how best to describe the possible theme's of this little treasure. Suffice it to say, it has become a lost gem as the crappy documentaries start rolling smf attempt to disclose the reasons behind the early demise of Kurt, taking the focus off the music. That's correct, this film was done before Kurt expired.
A must for Nirvana fans and those who are curious about what musical genius looks and sounds like.

German genius with underground fashion.
2 of 2 found this helpful If you're looking for a sort of raw feel to film and you don't mind subtitles and you don't speak German, you'll enjoy most of what Herzog does. Herzog did Grizzly Man, to give you an example of his current stuff. However, allot of this collection is some of his earlier stuff. I won't comment on any particular film because I'm not a film critic. However, I will say that I love well done movies from any genre, and Herzog has been noted by experts as being able to blend documentary style pacing with regular acting and screenwriting. It's as if you are bearing witness to the birth of a new style of filming as you watch his technique. I really don't know a better way to describe it. You get to peer into the mind of a genius as you piece together the themes and storylines of these gems. It's fun stuff, take my word on that.

Ian McShane gives an uncanny delivery of the unsettling Al Swearengen..wow!
Well written western drama that takes place in a town called Deadwood, SD right after the American Civil War. During this period, the town was untouched by state and federal government and remained relatively lawless. It's the classic examples of might is right and mob rule.
The acting is superb. The character development is very well played out. The production value is at a very high level. Ian McShane practically lunges out through the screen at you. He plays to a perfect pitch the unsettling character Al Swearengen. If you like immersing yourself in period pieces, you should enjoy this one from start to finish.
