m scott peck is a prophet just like he claims to be
Now let me tell you what I really think! First of all, a disclaimer. I'm Greg's wife, so don't be a hater on my man. In all seriousness, though, this author is brilliant. Since a prophet is one who tells the people God's message, and since a central tenet of Christianity (Peck's religion) is God's love revealed to humanity through the incarnation of His Son Jesus Christ, Peck's mission is, in part, to offer hints toward the realization of Christ's message of reconciliation for all who will come. Peck has radical ideas about the definitions of love, particularly parental love. It's also fascinating to read this book within the context of his own disastrous life. I'm nevertheless reminded of David in the Bible, a failure as a husband and father on many levels, who was spoken of as a "man after God's own heart" and who was an ancestor of none other than Christ Himself. I saw Peck on Oprah once and he seemed anything but loving - arrogant, humorless, tense, and clearly seeing himself as superior to the heckling audience. To which I say, "So what?" God loves jerks, too, and He can and does use anyone He sees fit.
As a side note, I'm getting a lot out of a personal study I'm doing right now. There's a book called How People Grow by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. I'm cross-referencing The Road Less Traveled, How People Grow and the New International Version of the Bible and I'll be darned if they don't all segue neatly together somewhere in the middle! Looks like: 1)Peck isn't as liberal as I'd always been warned he was 2)Cloud and Townsend may not be as conservative as people seem to want them to be and 3)The Word of God may be neither as liberal nor as conservative as people want it to be! HALLELUJAH!
