Small but kind of beautiful
I managed to burn out my previous Dyson by failing to clean the filters (yes, when Dyson say wash them, they mean it). I didn't even hesitate to look to Dyson for the replacement: I've had them for years and they've been great - it's only been extreme old age or my stupidity that's done for them.
I confess, however, that I couldn't quite bring myself to spend more than £200 on the replacement. So, despite comments in reviews that the DC24 was on the small side, I went for it in preference to the bigger and more expensive DC25.
When the delivery came I thought I'd made a terrible mistake. At first glance it looked more like a child's toy. It's small. No, really, amazingly tiny.
The problems this causes are entirely around capacity and image. If you have a standard sized house with carpets throughout, this vacuum cleaner is not for you. You'll be emptying it every few minutes. Equally, if you are a bachelor with a small flat this vacuum is also not for you. Your manhood will be severely compromised.
However, if, like me, neither of these apply and you actually have a house with lots of stairs and lots of bare boards, it's great. It's super light and easy to carry about, and it cleans on boards just beautifully. I'm guessing it would also suit an elderly person, or any one with a small flat with little storage and no masculinity issues.
Being a Dyson, the design is either ingenious, or infuriating, depending on your appetite for gadgets that are like children's transformer toys. It does everything you could possibly want - most of it very simply - but it usually involves turning one thing into another and clicking this thing into that. The DC24 also has a strange double hinged system to make it go into the cleaning position - it's a knack - and before you get that knack you may think you've bought a faulty device.
But once you've got the hang of it, it's just great - cleans a treat, super compact, easy to empty - and, at less than £200, good value. Just remember to clean the filters.
