Don't trust the reviews
1 of 1 found this helpful Sonic the Hedgehog was supposed to be the game that returned Sonic's name to glory, but due to tight time constants, the game was left horribily unfinished, chalked with bad glitches, absomimal loading times, a lanky camera, and a bad control set-up, not to mention tons of features were removed from the game. However, dispite all these things, Sonic the Hedgehog is still a great game. It offers a wide range of gameplay that will leave the game refreashed everytime you play it.
Critics have panned the game for its faults, but if you can see past them, you find unique and enjoyable experience you will not regret.

A decent port, a must-have game
0 of 1 found this helpful Though the PC port has some setbacks compaired to the original Genesis version, the Sonic & Knuckles Collection is indeed a great game, and a must buy for any fan of classic platforming games. The collection includes three games: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles; the later combining the levels of the other two games with additinal features, thus the bulk of the collection. This PC version has it's flaws, but still retains the charm the original had.
Proformence::
On modern day PCs, the Sonic and Knuckles Collection runs smoothly and flawlessly while in fulscreen mode, however, will run rediculessly fast in windowed mode. While I've read of a patch that fixes this problem, I could not find it. Though it is not nessecary to worry about this, as you'll prefer to play this game in fullscreen mode anyway.
Sound:
The sound is prehapes the biggest setback for the game, as it seems so much softer and dimmer than the Genesis version. However, the issue itself is not that big, and if you've never played the Genesis version, I doubt you'd even notice.
I would like to point out that when I first played the game, a mild humming sound occured in acompany with the music. This can be fixed by selecting "Options" from the game selection screen and then, under the Music Settings, click on "General MIDI", then OK.
Controls:
The controls for the game is half decent, but they work for the most part. Player 1 uses the direction keys to move and the Enter key to jump, and Player 2 uses D,X,V, and C to move and A to jump. These controls can be edited at any time if need be. You can also plug in a game controller to your PC and use that as well, eliminating any discomfort with the keyboard.
Note: To use a game controller, select Options from the menu bar, then Use Joystick (or just hit F8). Click the drop-down menu next to P1 (or P2), then press the Down key and Enter, then hit OK. Controller can be bought at any Target or RadioShack.
Gameplay:
If you've ever played any Sonic game, then I need not explain the princibles of play. You can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Sonic and Tails togeater as you run, loop and jump through twenty-four diffrent levels, while crushing Dr. Eggman's Badniks, collecting Chaos Emeralds, and stopping the dreaded doomsday device, the Death Egg. Each charecter has his own special abilities; Sonic can create an insta-sheild and gains a new ability when he gets a sheild, Tails can fly around and carry Sonic for a period of time (via second player), and Knuckles can guild around and climb walls. The gameplay is fast and furious and truely addicting.
Overall, the Sonic and Knuckles Collection is truely a great and classic game. It may be of lower-quality compaired to the Genesis version, but if you don't have a Genesis, then I recommend you buy this game.
