Approaching the Word Barrier, and Plowing though It...
3 of 3 found this helpful This book is an inexpensive and wonderful way to get acquainted with formal logic. While many of the more popular university textbooks have much insight, it has to be said that there is an intrinsic problem of directing said books to students who have been immersed in philosophy and collegiate level work for an extended period of time (as many students accepted to higher universities are from prep schools which have excellent immersion programs). Thus, the language in these other textbooks can be thick and inaccessible to many students who either are not familiar with philosophic jargon or who do not have extensive background with collegiate level work. Hurley provides a more user friendly approach, which, when paired with a course, provides a basis for instruction with is both well structured and wonderfully explicated. While the analysis of informal logic in this text is not quite sufficient, it does provide useful information.
