Spotting Value
1 of 1 found this helpful First off, one thing most people discover is that some images they see understate what the item is and coins is one area where this happens often. This piece I purhased appears to be low grade, when in fact it is virtually as struck. See, certain colonial coins were counterfitted and others were made with poorly crafted dies. In both cases, you have to understand the specifics. However, you also have to be aware of fraudulent pieces some people offer up for sale. A good example is a Lebonese counterfit 1/2 cent, 1811, which I purchased overseas on eBay. It was a cleaver fake, but upon grading it was returned as "Questionable Authenticity", and with eBays help received a full refund. So, even someone seasoned is able to get caught makng a mistake. So, the key to spotting a value, is know what you are buying. Knowledge is your friend.
