Delicate Firewire Port
I can't comment on the recording quality yet because I haven't shot any video yet. I bought this old Digital 8 camcorder to digitize my dad's old 8mm tapes via firewire.
I've had two issues that are apparently not uncommon with these Sony Camcorders. After plugging and unplugging the firewire cable maybe a dozen times one of the tiny little pins in the 4 pin firewire port on the camcorder got bent and wasn't making contact when in I would plug in the cable. With a magnifying glass, a flashlight, and a thin sewing needle I was able to bend it back enough to make it work again.
The other issue was sometimes during playback the picture would start getting messed up. I don't know the technical term for it. It would start looking 'ghosty' with vertical blurring or 'ghostiness' . I found a discussion thread about this exact problem over at cnet. Others have had the same problem with various Sony 8mm camcorders. The solution is to gently tap the camcorder on top or on its side. That actually worked.
