    Plain People of the Confederacy
My grandfather fought for the 4th Arkansas Infantry Company I at the age of 15. I wanted to read how the yeoman class Southern faired in the war and this gave me quite an insight as to why soldiers left their companies and regiments to tend to their fields and family; to return once again to the fight. The same thing happened in the Revolutionary War, especially in agricultural regions. When the War Between the States ended, the misery of the Southerners began in earnest. My family lost everything because they couldn't pay taxes. They did not own slaves and did not fight for anything buy States Rights. What happened after the War sowed the seeds of resentment, born by poverty.

    War Between the States
I bought "Southern Lady, Yankee Spy" because as a member of the UDC, I wanted to know why a well born Richmond, VA lady would spy for the North. The author was able to make the heronine's feeling real and understandable. Women in history, holding onto their ideals at any cost should be known to a wider audience. I will donate this book to our library so more can read a skillfully written book. Elizabeth's heroism, steadfast love for the Union and her skill at getting information to General Grant and others was truly amazining. Perhaps she was born before her time, but in this book, she was where she should have been, helping her fellow human beings regardless of status or color. This book is not a fast read, but well worth the time reading about her actions in the war between the states.

The Fires Of Pride by William R. Trotter (2005
As a member of the UDC I want to know more about the War Between the States; not just the Generals, but everyday people to rose to fight for their families and State. I learned a great deal about the Ironclads and the men who made this happen. The women in this book are strong and resilient in the face of much danger and adversity. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this period of time.
