Much better than it had to be...
3 of 3 found this helpful I hadn't seen Lipstick since it came out in 1976, when it was roundly panned by critics and audiences alike. As the premiere supermodel of the era, Margaux Hemingway was as ubiquitous as Naomi Campbell is now. And like many models who star in films, Margaux wasn't that great... but she wasn't that bad either. She was a top model playing a top model, so how hard could it be? Though her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard, she emotes quite admirably onscreen. Also starring Margaux's little sister Mariel Hemingway in an unforgettable performance from someone so young, Lipstick is a thriller that grips the viewer in its jaws, shaking it ferociously until the very satisfying, very bloody ending. Chris Sarandon (Susan Sarandon's ex) competently plays the creepy fiendish "musician" who plays out his sick fantasies on both of the women; and the script and direction are tight enough that the movie races along. The end of the movie is filmed in LA's Pacific Design Center when it was under construction (God, that seems a thousand years ago), but even under construction, the "Blue Whale" reeked of glamour and sophistication that epitomized the era. I recommend this movie for a couple of reasons - one is that it is a tantalizing time-capsule back to the chic 70s, and another is because it is simply a well-done thriller.
