CHRISTMAS - JIM NABORS
I re-discovered Jim Nabors on utube after many life changes in 35 years. I was looking for the "Lord's Prayer" and after listening to several, I tried again and there it was. Who can sing that prayer better? In any case it reduced me to tears. I've since bought 4 more of his CDs including this on. It's not so much the songs any more - like you reader I have heard most of them umpteen times in grocery stores etc. It's the singer. His delivery is sublime in some and believable in others. Never jaded.

OUT OF AFRICA (1993, VHS)
1 of 1 found this helpful I copied this movie off cable when it was first shown and when it wore out I bought this. To begin with I love the period, the genre but mostly the fast-vanishing character Meryl Streep so aptly portrays. The compassionate courage displayed in whipping down a lion, a beast the character feared in the extreme in ealier scenes; the heightened sense of true inner morality in the midst of her very human life struggles; the love, sense of responsibility and humility depicted by the kneeling in front of authorities for the sake of the people who have served her and whom she as good as adopted to care for. The resiliency in the face of gross betrayal by a husband whom she was beginning to love, in the loss of her coffee plantation. The resciprocated love and devotion of her servants and the respect of all who came to know her is earned. Robert Redford's character on the other hand did not deserve her, falling far short of hers. Wanting an affair with her he suggested she go on a safari with him and went so far as to ignore her plea, "if you like me a little don't ask this of me." That she had to argue with him later to marry her provides further proof of his 'boyness', his inability to see or much less respect her values, her character.. He seems to think his mere desire for her equals love. No doubt she gained something she needed from that affair in her otherwise grim existence, but it was a pittance of what she deserved. For me this movie is heart breaking, heart warming and uplifting all at the same time every time I see it; much akin to visiting dear old friends.

CULINARY ARTS ENCYCLOPEDIC COOKBOOK BY CULINARY ARTS
1 of 1 found this helpful Excellent cookbook, suitable for any newer cook, whether you're a bride in the Alaskan Wilderness having to learn how to dress and prepare wild game or a city girl like I was. I got my '62 copy whe I was new to cooking and it has been my cook's bible since. My old edition is falling apart, especially the index and it is a well-constructed book! I wa lamenting this fact and my son went on the internet and found me another copy, exactly the same. I could not believe it was still available! It still is the definitive work on the art of cooking.
