    An Everyday PDA
In 2000 I bought a brand new HP Jornada. That thing was at least $700 out the door, but I used it all the time and loved it. Not quite as long ago I got the Treo 650 and realized two things: 1). I missed the Windows Pocket PC operating environment and disliked the Palm, and 2). I didn't like having a phone and PDA in one device as much as I thought I would. Knowing as well that it was completely unnecessary to spend $700, or even $200 for a used Windows based PDA having everything I could possibly want, in addition to having options like wi-fi connectivity built in, I found the HP iPaq rx1950 on eBay for less than $100. It was 2008 when I purchased it, and the device was the latest and greatest in 2005. There are only a few things I don't like about it, and these pretty much have to do with fact that the 2005 technology isn't completely compatible with the 2008 and 2009 computers I work with. The Windows Mobile 5 doesn't seem to behave well with the Windows Mobile (which I think used to be ActiveSync) base software on my Vista PC. Each time I attempt to sync, Vista sees it as a device I've never sync'd with before. These software things I can figure out eventually, and don't reflect badly on the device itself... other than perhaps if the device can't be upgraded to ever work with the current technology. As for the device itself, the battery life doesn't seem to last more than a day and a half, even if it's just sitting idle. But that could be an easy enough fix with a battery replacement, which appears to be a very standard looking cell-phone type battery. A very wonderful thing about it is that when the battery does die, my data don't disappear... that was a problem with the Jornada... however, when the battery dies, I do have to re-set the date and time from 19 MAY 2005 to the current day, month, year and time of day. Going from a year 2000 PDA to a 2005 PDA, I've been very happy to have everything I liked about the old Jornada included, improved and having a few additional features I've come to appreciate. I use it several times a week, and I'm not stressed out about breaking it or losing it since I paid so little for it. I do keep my PCs fairly current, as well as my cell phones, and by having a PDA with the just the features I want from a PDA, I don't require a "smart" phone or the additional data plan that is often required to get a fair price for such a phone.
