One of the better detective, thriller movies out there...relevant despite its age.
1 of 1 found this helpful This is a great thriller/romance/detective story--full of plot twists and suspense, not to mention fantastic performances and great chemistry between the actors. Barkin and Pacino are amazing, as is John Goodman in a key supporting role.
I am really picky when it comes to movies. I enjoy most genres, but find that very few movies really engage and entertain me in a powerful and enduring way. I first saw this film when it came out in 1989; then recently saw it on cable. I instantly remembered how great it was and knew I wanted to have it in my collection.

Worth watching if you like horror, suspense and gore, but the book's better
I read the book--it was a page turner--so I am somewhat biased in my approach to the movie, having had expectations that I might not have had if I hadn't read the book first and really liked it. I would recommend the book. Because Scott Smith wrote both the book and the screenplay, I expected the movie to follow the book more closely than it did. While it was "okay" for a horror film, I found the movie less entertaining than the book and more gory than I like to watch (though toned down from the gore in the book). The ending was also changed from the book--which was another negative to me.
I'd still recommend the movie--as far as horror films go, it's not bad and it's something different. The variety it offers from your typical "young adult" horror flick in terms of plot and location and "circumstance" is a factor in its favor.

A Refreshing New Take On The Horror/Comedy Genre
As a horror and comedy, and horror-comedy fan, I rarely find films that are truly inspired, creative and have the power to engage over and over. But I have to say, "The Cabin in the Woods" does just that--and more. For my time and money, it's one of the best I've seen in a long time. Interesting characters, plot and great acting--particularly from a few, key players.
Witty, ironic, subtle and overt; this movie has it all-and if you are a fan of the genre, you will (at least) appreciate what the writers and director were trying to accomplish, and at best, will really enjoy it. There are a ton of great lines, unexpected scenes, and "gotchas". Many people have written their own reviews and interpretations of what this movie is about and "trying to convey"-it just inspires that type of on-going discussion. I would definitely recommend this movie--it is fun, entertaining, thought-provoking and scary---all at the same time.
