The history of electronic music
A good (but non-chronological) stab at tracing the history of electronic music from the pioneers of the genre (Joe Meek, John Cage, the Dr. Who theme) via the 70s (Brian Eno, Human League, The Normal, Throbbing Gristle) and 80s (New Order, Depeche Mode) with a healthy dose of Krautrock (Faust, Can, Kraftwerk) on the way, ending up with some of the leading lights of the current scene (Aphex Twin, Fennesz, Autechre, Schneider TM.) It's far from complete (no Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire or Wendy Carlos for instance), and there's too much of a bias towards the modern "alternative" soundscapes for my taste, but it's obviously been lovingly compiled and is worth space in any electronic music-lover's colection.

(Almost) all the Rock 'N' Roll you'll ever need!
A terrific 2-CD distillation of "old-time rock 'n' roll" (up to 1963), a perfect solution for those who'd like some R&R in their collection but aren't prepared to commit to full artist albums. The glaring omission of Elvis Presley should lose this compilation half a point, but hey, pretty much every track here is a gem, so why quibble? A no-risk purchase for anyone looking to explore R&R - enjoy!

Notable new wave pop from Swindon's finest
1979's DRUMS AND WIRES was XTC's 3rd album and saw Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding's spiky, angular (but ultra-melodic) songwriting start to converge with mainstream tastes, even resulting in their first hit MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL. Almost-nursery-rhymes like HELICOPTER and SCISSOR MAN mix with more intense fare like ROADS GIRDLE THE GLOBE and epic closer COMPLICATED GAME to form a minor classic of what would become known as "New Wave." XTC would get even better in time, but DRUMS AND WIRES was the first indication that they'd outlive that New Wave. (NOTE - some versions of this CD come with extra tracks LIMELIGHT and CHAIN OF COMMAND, originally from the free 7" single given away with the vinyl album, plus earlier single LIFE BEGINS AT THE HOP.)
