Still holds value
The Zoom H2n is an absolute gem in the world of portable recorders. While it's been around for a while, it remains one of the best value-for-money field recorders out there. The five-mic Mid-Side and XY configuration offers a level of flexibility that’s hard to find at this price point, making it ideal for musicians, podcasters, and field recordists alike.
Yes, the noise floor is noticeable, especially when recording in quieter environments, but for most applications, it’s more than manageable—especially with a little post-processing. The overall sound quality is rich and full, capturing detail in a way that still outperforms many modern competitors.
And let’s talk about the H2e, Zoom’s so-called "upgrade." In many ways, it’s actually a step backward—losing features like the proper Mid-Side decoding and making questionable design choices. The H2n, on the other hand, remains a workhorse with a solid build, intuitive controls, and a self-contained recording system that just works.
If you’re after a budget-friendly recorder with pro-level versatility, the H2n is still a fantastic choice. Just pair it with a decent windscreen and a bit of careful gain staging, and it’ll serve you well for years.
